The engineering strain also called Cauchy strain is expressed as the deformation to the initial dimension of the material which a force is applied.

Engineering strain formula:

Strain: e ＝ΔL / L

where, L = the original length of the fiber, ΔL = Change in Length, e = engineering normal strain.

For example, when ΔL = 3, L = 6, then e = 0.5.
