Lung volumes/Capacity Calculator |
Lung capacities and Lung volumes refer to the volume of air when you breath.
To an adult man the lung capcity is about 6 litres of air.
Volume | Average value (litres) | Derivation | |
---|---|---|---|
In men | In women | ||
Vital capacity | 4.6 | 3.1 | IRV plus TV plus ERV |
Inspiratory capacity | 3.5 | 2.4 | IRV plus TV |
Functional residual capacity | 2.3 | 1.8 | ERV plus RV |
Total lung capacity | 5.8 | 4.2 | IRV plus TV plus ERV plus RV |
Volume | Value (litres) | |
---|---|---|
In men | In women | |
Inspiratory reserve volume | 3.0 | 1.9 |
Tidal volume | 0.5 | 0.5 |
Expiratory reserve volume | 1.1 | 0.7 |
Residual volume | 1.2 | 1.1 |
vital capacity = IRV + TV + ERV
total lung capacity = IRV + TV + ERV + RV
inspiratory capacity = TV + IRV
functional residual capacity = ERV + RV
Where TV is Tidal Volume, IRV is Inspiratory Reserve Volume, RV is Residual Volume, ERV is Exspiratory Reserve Volume.
